How I was able to get 99% in Advanced Functions

By Chanwoo P.
Last semester, I ended up with 99% in Advanced Functions class and I was very proud of myself. The reason why I was able to get the mark 99% in advanced functions was because I reviewed, completed homework every day, and paid attention to my teacher’s important announcements carefully. When I took this course, I was very nervous because it was my first Grade 12 course, and I knew how important it was for me to receive a good mark in this course for university. To be honest, Grade 12 math is much more complicated than other math courses from previous years, but I have some tips for you to get a higher mark and successfully end the course.

First, memorize math vocabulary. In unit tests or quests, there are a lot of application or thinking questions we need to solve. If we don’t know the meaning of certain words or what questions are asking us to solve for exactly, we can't solve the problems with providing proper solutions. This might result in receiving knowledge marks only, but losing application, thinking, and communication marks. So we must study hard to memorize math vocabulary.

Next, do more than the required textbook questions everyday. Most students only do homework questions. It is good and important to do homework; however, if you want to get higher marks like I did, you need to do optional questions a lot.

Finally, reduce sleep time and free time, which means, use your time efficiently. Numerous students don't use their time efficiently, but it is true that spending time wisely is quite difficult. Even the adults also don't use it wisely. So, we need to change our daily habits and strive hard to schedule study time to do more.

Even though I gave these tips, if you do your best, I can guarantee that you will get excellent marks. Good luck!

Spending my Summer in Korea

By Sungmin K.
Most Korean international students want to go back to Korea and meet their families. As I have been in Canada for a long time, I want to go back to Korea as well and see my family and friends. Also, there are many things I want to eat and do when I go back to Korea. In this article, I will talk about what I wanted to eat and what I wanted to do when I go back to Korea while I was in Canada.

Students who live in homestay usually eat Canadian food, so they rarely have a chance to eat Korean food. I guess most students who live in homestays probably miss Korean food. The food that I missed the most while living in Canada was home-cooked meals. Home-cooked meals are definitely different from what you eat in restaurants. Therefore, there is no chance to eat Korean home-cooked meals in
Canada. I think that is why I miss home-cooked meals more. In addition, I miss Korean snacks and drinks that are not sold in Canada.

Secondly, I want to go out with my friends or family. I have always liked going to amusement parks since I was young. Both Lotte World and Everland, which are the representative amusement parks in Korea, are close to where I live in Korea. Therefore, I have been visiting there since I was young, so I wanted to go there when I go back to Korea. I miss visiting the amusement parks even more as I was not able to go last summer. Therefore, it is one of the things I want to do when I go back to Korea this time. The last thing I want to do is a personal thing. When I go back to Korea this time, I want to learn various instruments. I am interested in various instruments such as guitar and drum. Therefore, I will try many challenges when I go back to Korea. In addition to these, there are many other things that many students want to do when they go back to Korea. However I think many students will want to do something similar to what I have listed when they go back to Korea.

My favourite season

By Eunseo C.
It's getting hotter and starting to rain a lot in Waterloo. This means summer is coming. Summer is the hottest season, and many people dislike it because the humid weather makes them feel down when it rains, but my favourite season is summer.

The biggest reason why I like it is that I can have a long daytime with an early sunrise and a late sunset. Sunlight gives me energy and helps me to be calm, so I like to be in the sun during the day. Also, summer nature is full of bright colours, plants and trees turn green, and many flowers bloom in different colours. So, I can relax while watching them around me.

Moreover, summer is a great season to enjoy a variety of activities such as swimming in the sea, trips to the beach, and having a picnic along with warm weather. It's a bit difficult to eat cold drinks or ice cream sometimes in winter because it’s cold, but in summer I can easily have them, and I can eat more fruits like watermelon, peaches, and grapes than other seasons as well.

Besides, in summer, there are long breaks that are one of the reasons most students love and wait for this season. At this time, I can have new experiences that I haven’t by trying something other than study. In addition, international students like me may go back to their country during vacation and see their family and friends. I am also looking forward to going to South Korea after this quadmester is over to spend time with people I miss and to eat Korean food that is not here in Canada.

Therefore, in the summer with positive vibes, I get active and refreshed by nature and the warm sunshine, and the only things I can do this season make me wait for the summer. Although it has become hard to do outdoor activities and gather with friends due to the spread of Covid-19 since last year, I hope that many people have a healthy and enjoyable summer.

Since the emergence of online learning, there has been a discussion on whether online classes are better than traditional classes. There have been competing schools of thought with valid arguments for and against both. In the case of distance learning, it may be most appropriate at colleges and universities. Distance learning allows students to balance their other commitments more effectively, at least in cases they are adult learners, commuters, and part-time students. They don’t believe that they sacrifice a quality education for the convenience of utilizing distance learning. However, both traditional and online learning comes with advantages and disadvantages. When is online learning more convenient than traditional learning? This blogpost indicates the real potential of online learning versus traditional classes.
